Matthew 14:27-30 (NIV) [bible-link v=”Matthew+14%3A27-30+&version=NIV” c=”light”]
But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
A few years back, I had the absolute joy of visiting Israel. One evening, I had the opportunity to travel on a boat on the Sea of Galilee under a full moon. It was a surreal moment, made even more special when the captain of the boat played the song ‘Oceans’ by Hillsong United over the speakers.
I believe the song was based around this story of Peter walking on water with his Saviour. I love the lines of the bridge that say, ‘Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders, let me walk upon the waters, wherever You would call me. Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander, and my faith will be made stronger in the presence of my Saviour’. (Hillsong United, Oceans, 2013)
To experience the wonder and the awe of walking on water would have been incredible. But it required Peter to completely trust Jesus, and keep his eyes fixed on Him, in the process.
Often in my life, I have discovered that the more I trust God, the more He leads me into incredible opportunities.
Are you ready for God to call you into something that is only possible through complete trust?
Let’s not play it safe and be like the other disciples in the boat. May we have the resolve to be people who don’t limit our trust in God.
